FAQ.
Q: What is SPMU microblading and SPMU digital micro/nanopigmenation?
Semi-Permanent MakeUp Microblading is a manual cosmetic makeup tattooing method used to deposit pigment into the upper basal membrane of the epidermis layer of the skin, via aligned microneedles to create fine hair-like strokes. SPMU Digital micro/nanopigmentation whilst similar to microblading, utilizes a digital machine and cartridge nanoneedle grouping attachments to administer fine hair-like strokes as well as soft powder pigment. Digital machine method is less invasive, quicker and yields results that last longer than that of microblading. The digital machine allows for rapid yet pressure-appropriate deposits of pigment via a single point nanoneedle for a softer powdered ombre effect or hyper-realistic hairstroke. Both manual and digital methods performed are semi-permanent. Semi-permanent cosmetic makeup enhances the brow shape and density whilst providing a more hyper-realistic appearance than that of previous block permanent makeup methods utilized in the past. Microblading and Micropigmentation are a 2 step process (multistep, if they have seborrhea, alopecia, less than 50% faded existing tattoo, strong immune system &, etc). The initial session provides the foundation and brow shape calculated in accordance with the golden intersection known as the phi (1.618) ratio to the unique proportions of the individual's face morphology. 4-6 weeks after the initial session, an enhancement session known as the touch up is performed. The touch up is not a recommendation but a requisite session needed to achieve the most desired results. The recovery time between the 2 sessions is 4-10 weeks. The ideal interval for the 2 sessions is 4 weeks for digital nano & ombré/powder brows and 6 weeks for manual microblading. This 4-10 weeks recovery period allows for sufficient time for skin regeneration, displaying the truest pigment results. Anytime sooner is advised against to circumvent pigment bleeding, which can develop blurred strokes and development of scar tissue. During the recovery time before the touch up, it is vital that you follow postcare instructions with utmost importance. The touch up is the most crucial session performed, this session addresses and corrects any issues with shape, color, size, and areas where pigment did not take. Microblading and Micropigmentation are broken up into several procedures to allow for the perfection and correction of any of those variables incurred since the initial session and most importantly to prevent permanent skin trauma resulting in scar tissue.
Q: How long does it last?
The pigment duration varies from 6-18 months, with a mean of 12 months. I do not pass the dermis, therefore no hair follicle damage will incur. I use a proprietary blend of both Carbon-based organic and synthetic/inorganic iron oxide pigments produced by top cosmetic chemists. Iron oxide pigments are more natural looking due to its carbonless mineral-based composition. Iron oxide pigments do not turn blue/green over time but have warm red/pink tones. Organic pigments are more vibrant and vivid but tend to be cooler toned due to their Carbon element and plant/animal based composition. To prevent color migration, color corrector additives are added to pigments. Synthetic stable black additives are added to the iron-oxide pigments to neutralize warm tones and red/yellow color corrector additives are added to organic pigments to neutralize cool tones. This unique formula provides flexibility in customizing a color best suited for the individual’s undertones. They are considered the safest semi-permanent pigments on the market, testing with the highest percentage of retention. Pigment absorbed into the epidermis will gradually fade by sloughing off as skin cells die & regenerate. Most clients elect for a color-boost session around 8-12 months depending on how much the pigment has faded. Anytime after the 18 month period from the initial session date will require a new session. The pigment would have faded significantly too much by then to allow for a color boost.
Q: How long does it take?
From start to finish, the procedure takes about 3-5 hours. The waiver, consent, consultation, and the anesthetic application takes up most of this time. The anesthesia or numbing process takes 30 minutes using topical 5% lidocaine. The actual semi-permanent makeup procedure is roughly 45-90 minutes. Touch-ups typically run 90-120 minutes long. Once procedure briefing and consent have been established we can proceed to anesthesia and consultation.
-
During the consultation, I choose a pigment best suited for your complexion and hair color. After the pigment is chosen, I measure, map, and pre-draw the shape outline and size according to your unique face morphology. Utilizing the golden mean caliper and facial rulers I am able to achieve the best proportions, harmony, and balance for your individual bone structure. It is during this time that we can alter the shape and size tailored to your individual liking. We can adjust the shape and thickness as many times as you would like until we reach the desired look. When we have mutually reached a desired shape and size, the tattooing procedure can begin.
-
During my procedures, I only use the highest quality SPMU market available disposable needle cartridges & handle-blades as well as Permablend and Li pigments. Permablend pigments and Li pigments are researched and developed by top cosmetic labs and chemists and have passed strict USA* and EU guidelines for chemical safety. Additional information on CIC & MSDS for the pigments are available on Permablend and Li Pigments websites.
-
Each handle-blade and needle-cartridge component comes with a certificate of EO gas sterilization and is the sharpest available (≤ 0.25mm) on the market to ensure the finest of lines. Disposable blade, cartridge and handle components are discarded after each use in a sharps hazardous waste disposal bin to prevent any contamination and spreading of blood-borne pathogens.
-
Please note that for eyebrows, the color will fade over time and should be refreshed every 6-18 months for crisp color maintenance. As you age, fading is desired, due to the change in skin elasticity and facial structures. However, this does not mean that your semi-permanent makeup will completely disappear. Depending on your skin type and overall health, over time your semi-permanent makeup may leave a soft haze of residual pigment behind.
-
After you are content with the density and shape of your new brows and the initial session is completed, follows the most important step, the post-care. For best results, please refer to recovery period expectations, pre-care and post-care instructions listed below and adhere to them to the best of your ability. You may schedule your 4-10 week touch up during your initial session or contact me via text at 504-215-4498 later to schedule.
Contraindications
Q.Who is not a suitable candidate for microblading or micropigmentation?
-
Individuals using Accutane within the last year.
-
Individuals who have gotten a deep tan, chemical peels, using retinol-A in the last 2 weeks, and Botox in the last 4 weeks.
-
Individuals with heart conditions or using heart medications, certain autoimmune deficiency diseases, or diabetes.
-
Individuals with AIDS, HIV, HPV, HSV, HBV and other blood-borne pathogenic diseases.
-
Individuals with skin diseases, irritations and those prone to developing keloids.

-
Individuals who are pregnant.
-
Individuals under the age of 18.
-
Individuals with greater than 50% pre-existing tattoo work performed by another technician as well as any individuals that have undergone any SPMU procedures less than 6 months prior. If you are still interested in obtaining microblading or micropigmentation services by arch.ology with preexisting work, please text pictures for a consultation.
-
Nursing individuals who are interested in SPMU microblading or micropigmentation can be done at their own discretion. However, discussion and written consent from your doctor is required. Microblading and micropigmentation are still considered a tattoo, albeit a less invasive deposit of pigment on the upper basal membrane. Just like with alcohol or sushi consumption, it is a personal choice to do so during this period.
-
Although allergic reactions to the pigments and the topical numbing anesthetic used during the procedure are rare, it could be possible for certain sensitive individuals. I take all proper precautions for a safe session by using EO gas sterilized disposable needle cartridges and handle-blade components, single-use equipment, barrier film protection, and in a sanitized environment using hospital-grade anti-microbial CAVIwipes. Should clients follow my pre and post-care instructions, there should be minimal risks or complications.
Precare
Q. What do I need to do before my appointment?
-
Eat a snack as it can take up to 3 hours for some boss eyebrows.
-
Avoid consuming alcohol, aspirin/ibuprofen, or any vitamins that may thin your blood for min. 48 hours.
-
Avoid consuming caffeine 24 hours prior to the procedure, caffeine may make you anxious, jittery, and uncomfortable during the procedure.
-
Avoid the use of any facial tanning lotions and tanning of the facial area, in order for me to properly assess your natural skin tone.
-
Refrain from waxing or tweezing eyebrows a min. of 2 days prior, to prevent working on sensitive and inflamed skin.
-
You should, however, get them waxed, tweezed, and or threaded 3-7 days prior to the procedure for best mapping/shaping results during the consultation.
-
Refrain from the use of face scrubs or chemical peel procedures for a min. of two weeks prior.
-
Botox procedures should be done one month prior or one month after. It is recommended that you wait 4 weeks between Botox & SPMU procedures to prevent issues in shaping continuity and 2 weeks after the use of retinol-A & SPMU procedures due to possible skin sensitivity issues.
-
Please be advised you are more sensitive during and around your menstrual cycle, to avoid additional discomfort, try to book appointments after your menstrual cycle has completed.
-
If you are more sensitive to pain you may take Tylenol (acetaminophen) 30 mins prior to the appointment, but not any pain relievers containing aspirin, ibuprofen, or other blood-thinning NSAIDs.
-
Lidocaine topical anesthetic is administered and sealed for 30 minutes prior to the procedure to allow for maximum penetration. Another application of lidocaine is administered again after your first pass when the skin is open for added anesthesia. The procedure is relatively painless, however, everyone's pain tolerance is different. Mild discomfort is exhibited and has been compared to threading, tweezing, and waxing of sensitive areas.
-
Feel free to come in with your makeup on, so I can see your preferred every day look. Reference pictures of shapes and colors of brows, lips, and liners are always welcomed.
Recovery Period Expectations
-
Shrinking and fading of pigment by up to 40%, scabbing, flaking, disappearance and then the resurgence of pigment and strokes are common and expected.
-
Results vary contingent on the individual, conditional on skin type, lifestyle, overall health, and most importantly your strict adherence to post-care instructions.
-
It is crucial that you DO NOT pick off your scabs, for you may prematurely remove pigment that has not settled into the epidermis.
-
To achieve the most desired outcome, your post-care is just as, if not more important than the technician’s initial application. It's a collaborative effort.
-
4 weeks for micropigmentaton and 6 weeks for microblading procedures are the ideal intervals between the initial and touch up sessions. Truest pigment often won't show until at least 4-6 weeks, any procedures performed sooner are not advised due to the potential development of scar tissue by overworking the skin. Overworked skin can lead to permanent area trauma causing localized dermal fibrosis, counterproductive of the semi-permanent, and non-invasive qualities of microblading and micropigmentation.
-
It's perfectly normal to be a little concerned, but I assure you, all issues concerning shape, size, and color after that period can and will be addressed during the touch-up. Touch-ups are essential to define and perfect the final results. For successful results...during the recovery period...patience you must have, my young Padawan. Otherwise, Happy Healing!! :)
Postcare
-
Immediately after the procedure, the procedure area will look darker and strokes will be sharply defined. Over the next 1-5 days it will appear even darker and thicker as scabs begin to form. Depending on your skin, it takes anywhere from 7-14 days for scabbing to be over. Your goal is to keep the scabs dry, and on for as long as possible, but moisturized enough to stay flexible! The longer the scabs stay on for, the crisper and even the strokes will be. DO NOT PICK OR PEEL THE SCABS!!
-
During the recovery period, the area may feel similar to that of a sunburn. Itchiness and inflammation may occur. When your skin is inflamed, your body naturally releases mast cells containing bradykinin and histamines causing redness and itchiness. You may take an antihistamine and NSAID pain reliever to help alleviate any swelling.
-
Apply a clean icepack washed with anti-bacterial/anti-microbial soap wrapped in several clean paper towels to the treated area only if necessary.
-
AVOID for min. of 7-14 days or until the scabbing/healing phase is complete on the procedure area:
-
getting procedure area wet: PAT DRY IMMEDIATELY
-
swimming
-
long showers/baths
-
saltwater environments
-
bacteria-ridden environments
-
wearing makeup
-
sleeping on face
-
direct sunlight exposure
-
tanning
-
saunas
-
exercising
-
other activities that induce excessive sweating
-
facials, peels, creams, scrubs
-
retinol-A products, botox injections, laser procedures
-
excessive touching of the procedure area
-
Recovery Timeline:
-
2 Hours: (Immediately After) Any redness, irritation, or inflammation will decrease within 2 hours of the procedure.
-
Day 1-3: (Scabbing Phase) Avoid all contact with water on the procedure area. Be sure to blot off any lymph/plasma fluid secretions in between this time to prevent excessive scabbing. The procedure area will look really dark during this period as the area begins to scab.**Follow postcare instructions above and below and avoid the listed activities above as well as in the NOT ALLOWED section below.
-
Day 3-7: (Flaking Phase) Scabbing and flaking of scabs are the most prevalent during this period. Pigment on the procedure area will appear light when the scabs fall off. *Follow postcare instructions above and below and avoid the listed activities above as well as in the NOT ALLOWED section below.
-
Day 7-14: (Healing Phase) As your skin is healing a new layer of skin will form over the pigment and appear milky, shrunken, very light or even completely gone. *Follow postcare instructions above and below and avoid the listed activities above as well as in the NOT ALLOWED section below.
-
Day 15-45: (Post Healing Phase) During this time, color and hair strokes where pigment took, will slowly reappear and become more vibrant, so please be patient. You may apply makeup over the area during this phase. Areas that are patchy where pigment did not take will be fixed at the touch up session
Postcare Cleaning Instructions:
1. Always WASH YOUR HANDS thoroughly with anti-bacterial/anti-microbial soap before touching the procedure area. Use clean pillowcases and never touch the procedure area with unwashed hands. You don’t want to get the area infected!!! Infections can cause unwanted scarring. I have never had any clients that have developed an infection, however, if it does become red and swollen, use sterile water (saline solution) to rinse out the infected zone and dry immediately. With the use of my combination of EO gas sterilized disposable cartridges/needle components and your strict adherence to post-care instructions, you'll be on your way to looking fly as ever.
2. Repeat twice a day, after you wake up and before you go to bed for 7-14 days or until scabbing/healing phase is complete.
CLEAN the area very gently using a cotton pad/swab or gauze in patting motions to avoid prematurely picking off any scabs that would otherwise slough off on their own. You may also use a TINY amount of mild, natural fragrance-free cleanser (ex. baby wash, Cerave, Cetaphil Dr. Bronners, etc) on your face, but AVOID the procedure area at all cost.
3. Gently PAT DRY the procedure area if at any point you get the treated area wet with a clean cotton swab/pad, tissue or paper towel IMMEDIATELY, especially after showers and washing your face.
4. DRY HEALING is the BEST post-care method in order to maintain crisp and noticeable hair strokes and soft powdery effects, especially for oily-skin typed individuals. If the procedure area becomes itchy, you may moisturize SPARINGLY with the skin candy, provided to you. DO NOT use any other emollients, moisturizers, creams, lotions, petroleum jelly, or coconut oil for at least 2 weeks! Dry skin and combination skin types have better healed results. If you have very oily skin, SKIP the skin candy provided entirely to maintain crisper strokes. The oil secretions from your skin alone should suffice. If you find the area very dry/tight and itchy, gently pat the procedure area with CLEAN hands and a cotton swab to relieve the itch, whilst avoiding rubbing off of any scabs. You want your scabs to be dry and only lightly moisturized to stay flexible. NEVER greasy or soft and soggy.
Not Allowed:
-
DO NOT allow the treated area during the scabbing/healing phase to be wet or soaking in water for a long amount of time in the shower or while washing your face. You DO NOT want the scabs to get soggy. If it gets wet, dry the area immediately!
-
NO harsh cleansers, creams, or any other products on the treated area for at least 14 days. Chemicals and colorants of any kind will irritate the area and may cause an infection or interfere with healing and the color of your SPMU.
-
DO NOT apply make-up to the procedure area for the first 14 days. Makeup will suffocate the area and won’t allow the area to breathe and heal properly causing irritation and excessive scabbing.
-
DO NOT pick, peel or scratch at the scabs/dry skin/flakiness!!! Let the flakes fall off naturally. Picking can cause scarring, premature loss of pigment or hair, and even an infection.
-
If you have bangs, you must clip them back for the first 7 days to avoid irritation and infection.
-
Absolutely NO direct sun exposure or tanning for 4 weeks after the procedure. Tanning will either dramatically lighten or darken your SPMU depending on your skin type.
-
NO swimming, sauna, or activities that induce heavy sweating for the first 14 days. Salt is your worst enemy and will draw out the pigment!
-
NO facials, peels, retinol-A, Botox, chemical treatments, and microdermabrasion for at least 4 weeks after.
-
Avoid sleeping on your face and make sure you are sleeping on a CLEAN pillowcase.
After Scabbing/Healing Phase:
-
Once the flakes have fallen off, a new shiny layer of healing skin will completely cover the hair strokes. The pigment may look shrunken, muted, foggy and milky as if the procedure area has completely disappeared. Over the next several weeks color and hair strokes where pigment took, will slowly reappear and become more vibrant, so please be patient. You may apply makeup over the area during this phase.
-
The complete healing process takes about 4-6 weeks, at which time the true pigment orientation of the tattoo becomes evident. It is only after 6 weeks that your touch-up can be performed. Any earlier can damage the skin and cause scarring.
-
Once the treated area is completely healed, any changes or additions that need to be made can be done at your follow-up appointment.
-
The first appointment is about building foundational hair strokes, structure, and design.
-
Your touch-up is about assessing how the skin heals and retains pigment, as well as making any necessary adjustments such as; shape, symmetry, density, color, layering, or filling in gaps.
-
Your touch-up cannot be booked any sooner than 4-6 weeks nor any later than 12 weeks.
Once Fully Healed:
-
Wear Sunscreen!!! Exposure to the sun over time can cause premature fading and discoloration of the pigment. You can wear large sunglasses and a hat for further protection.
-
Rinse and dry the area thoroughly when in contact with chlorine or salt water.
-
Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydrogen Peroxide, Glycolic acid, Retinol-A and face peel/skin lightening products must be kept away from the procedure area as continued use could lighten the pigment resulting in a bleached out color.
-
If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed, please inform the laser technician. Continue at your own discretion. Laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the procedure area.
-
If you have oily skin, an iron deficiency, or a very strong immune system, your pigment will not last as long as others. If this is your case, you may need to come back earlier for color-boosts.
-
IMPORTANT: Oily skin will not heal as crisp as dry skin. Please note that hair strokes will be lighter and not as crisp after healed and will gradually fade over time.
-
This treatment is only meant to last 6-18 months depending on your skin and lifestyle. Color-boosts will be necessary.
-
For best results, several touch up appointments may be necessary for those trying to cover up previous tattoo work, those suffering from trichotillomania disorder, skin conditions such as alopecia and etc.
